Biodegradable, or better yet, compostable plastics are better than petroleum-based plastics for most everyday uses.

What makes something compostable rather than biodegradable?

A biodegradable product has the ability to break down naturally with the assistance of micro-organisms such as bacteria, fungi and algae. A compostable product also breaks down naturally, but has to break down within approximately 180 days leaving no visually distinguishable or toxic residues. Compostable products should also be able to support plant life. Cool, huh?

All compostable products are, by nature, biodegradable, but a biodegradable plastic may not necessarily be compostable. So when you gather your picnic or restaurant supplies, think how your decision will affect your world. Compostable suggestions from Green Home:
